WORK to improve access to the popular Five Pits Trail, which runs through Tibshelf, has begun this week
Derbyshire County Council will spend £110,000 building a new multi-user path through Temple Normanton to make it safer and easier for bikers and walkers to reach the 5.5 mile route.

Coun Brian Lucas, cabinet member for environmental services, told Chad: "We are committed to promoting healthier and greener lifestyles and we are working hard to expand our network of off-road routes for people to use.

"Road safety is a top priority for us and this new link will make it safer for people to reach the Five Pits Trail and enjoy getting out and about in Derbyshire's countryside."

The Five Pits Trail was built by Derbyshire County Council in 1989 and runs from Grassmoor Country Park to Tibshelf Ponds, following the route of the Great Central Railway line which served the five main collieries in the area.
