A MOTORIST was taken to hospital and treated for shock after she crashed into the wall of Sutton's Asda supermarket on Wednesday morning.
The elderly shopper smashed into another car before hitting the store at around 8.40am after she accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal instead of the brakes on her red VW Golf.
Supermarket bosses evacuated the store while police and firefighters closed off part of the car park, before Asda was reopened for normal business at around 11.30am.
An eye-witness told Chad: "I was getting out of my car to go shopping when I saw the woman coming around the car park. She was travelling fast and at first I thought it was a joy-rider.
"She hit the wall hard and is lucky to have escaped any serious injury. I went to help her, she was conscious and seemed ok. She told me that her brakes had failed on her car."
Watch manager Mark Dooley, of Ashfield Fire Station, told Chad the crash had been an unfortunate accident.
"The elderly lady hit the wrong pedal and hit another car," he said.
"Her car then went through a number of car park spaces and hit the wall. There were no serious injuries, but the woman was treated for shock and the man in the other car was also taken to hospital."
A spokeswoman for Asda told Chad: "We re-opened for normal business at around 11 30am. We have had to cordon off a number of tills down the middle where the damage has been done."
