AN inquest has been opened into the death of Sutton pensioner Sarah Holmes who died after her mobility scooter was hit by a car.
The 83-year-old, of Willow Crescent, died at King's Mill Hospital on 28th September following the collision on Lammas Lane on 23rd September.

The crash happened at midday and Mrs Holmes' injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

But her condition deteriorated and she died as a result of bronchial pneumonia due to immobility caused by the accident.

Nottinghamshire coroner Dr Nigel Chapman adjourned Friday's inquest for further reports.

TRIBUTES have been paid to Mrs Holmes, whose death has left her family devastated and struggling to come to terms with her death.

And in a tragic twist, Sarah's granddaughter Stephanie Haywood revealed how she was driving past the accident scene just minutes after it happened and knew immediately her grandmother was involved.

Speaking from the family home on Martyn Avenue, she said: "I came round the corner and saw a lot of traffic and a blue sleeping bag on the floor just like the one my grandma used to have on her legs when she went out — and that's when I knew.

"I couldn't believe it, I'd just been shopping in Mansfield and I saw her there lying on the side of the road. There was a witness there that said they'd seen the car hit her scooter and she'd been flung up in the air.

"She was conscious then but she was in a lot of pain down her side so they took her to King's Mill Hospital and she stayed there until she died on Monday."

A lifelong Sutton resident, Sarah had grown up in the town and spent most of her life at her Willow Crescent home.

Said granddaughter April Holmes: "She never had a bad word to say about anyone and she was always positive, even when she was in hospital on her last day she was still saying she'd been the luckiest woman alive to have us all.

"She's been through so much in her life and for her to go like that was a real shame, we all feel like she's been taken from us. I know there's a lot of people who will say she's elderly and that, but to us she has been taken away too soon."

Police are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact Sgt Tony Rungay at Sutton Police Station on 0300 3009999.
