A LABOUR councillor has called for two new town centre managers to be appointed by Ashfield District Council to help breathe new life into the area's economy.
The council currently employs one town centre manager, Mark Armstrong, who is responsible for regenerating the district by improving its image and traffic accessibility as well as by cutting crime and making Ashfield a more vibrant and sustainable place to work and live in.

Mr Armstrong is also working alongside Ashfield businesses and people to ensure the town centres create and maintain an attractive and clean environment to help encourage investment to the retail sector.

But Sutton Central councillor John Bulmer claims the task is too much for one person and says Sutton, Kirkby, Hucknall and rural areas should each have their own dedicated manager.

Said Coun Bulmer: "The town centres are the heart of the district and to keep the heart beating healthily we need dedicated people for those areas.

"It is important that we do all we can to regenerate the area's economy. The additional money created through improved publicity and regeneration will pay the salaries for two new positions."

But council leader Jason Zadrozny told Chad it was too early to consider introducing new town centre managers.

"We are currently reviewing the situation and looking at whether the post of town centre manager is working well or not," he said.

"We cannot spend taxpayers money on new positions without first assessing the effectiveness of existing positions. We will look at the role over the next six months and if we are happy with the performance then we may roll it out further.

"We have been consulting the people of Kirkby and at the moment the views are mixed, residents want to see results first."
