ASHFIELD council workers who staged a two-day walkout last week in a protest over pay say they are optimistic the dispute will be resolved.
Members of the Unison and Unite unions picketed the main district council offices in Kirkby on Wednesday and Thursday to demonstrate against a below inflation pay offer of 2.45 per cent.
The two days of action brought some schools, libraries and days centres across the area to halt and saw around 35 people join picketlines outside the Urban Road offices.
Said Richard Buckwell, Ashfield Unison branch secretary: "It went very well, we had a great deal of support from workers, but also a lot of people who were just passing by joined us to protest.
"It was a good demonstration across both days and we're all very confident now that we have made ourselves heard.
The action saw nearly half a million council workers strike as union bosses gather in London today to discuss what steps to take next.
'Better offer'
Added Mr Buckwell: "We'd like them to come back and make us a better offer obviously.
"We've also seen a great amount of public support for public sector workers, so people can clearly see the that the offer is way below the standard it should be.
"I think people have now seen what we are actually facing."
