COUNCILLORS and staff at Ashfield District Council should do more to reduce their carbon footprint as part of a long-term drive to fight climate change in the area, it has been claimed.
Coun Robert Sears-Piccavey wants council chiefs to conduct studies to measure their carbon footprint output over the coming months, before introducing steps to reduce their energy consumption and improve efficiency levels.

He told Chad: "We believe that man-made climate change is the most serious threat facing the environment and has severe implications for social and economic well being.

"The council must play a part in the fight against climate change. We need to set an example to the community and we need to know exactly where we are at with regards to our emission levels.

"The fact that we do not know what our emissions levels are is not acceptable. I want to see the council take positive steps and to reduce our carbon footprint by at least 10 per cent. We can make a massive difference."
