ASHFIELD District Council chief executive Alan Mellor is to seek early retirement because of ill-health.
A letter was circulated to all council employees last week outlining Mr Mellor's intention to request early retirement due to a 'continuing deterioration' of his health.

He stressed that the decision was entirely personal and was one which he had reluctantly reached, describing his time in the post as an honour and a privilege.

The 53-year-old, who has a wife and two daughters, has worked for Ashfield District Council for more than 20 years and has held the title of chief executive since 2002.

He has worked in local government around Nottinghamshire throughout his career and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and has a background in accountancy.

Mr Mellor held several posts within Ashfield District Council, including assistant director, head of service and director of corporate services before being promoted to chief executive.

In his spare time, Mr Mellor enjoys watching sport, is a Nottingham Forest supporter and enjoys the occasional game of golf.

His request for early retirement will be considered at a meeting of the council's interview committee today, with the final decision being taken by a future meeting of the full council.

Meanwhile, council leader Jason Zadrozny has paid tribute to Mr Mellor's dedication and says he is well-respected throughout the county.

Coun Zadrozny said: "He has given so many years and has been involved in a number of big projects, but in these circumstances he has got to put his health and his family first.

"If he does go, he will go with our best wishes."
