INTREPID swimmers Adam Walker and Chris Sheppard are preparing for the challenge of a lifetime . . . by swimming across the English Channel for charity in July.
The pair are taking up the special fundraiser to raise £5,000 for the Make a Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to youngsters with life-threatening illnesses.

And although the distance across the Channel is 21 miles, 29-year-old Adam, of Huthwaite, and Blidworth man Chris (38) will actually swim around 30 miles because of the tide – while the difficulties they could face include hyperthermia, exhaustion and sea sickness.

They are currently training around four times a week at Sutton Leisure Centre and will travel to Malta on Friday where they will complete a six-hour qualifying swim.

Said Adam: "A lot of this depends on the conditions which could make it more difficult. We won't have any special equipment, just trunks, goggles and a hat as well as goosefat or vaseline to prevent friction."
