HOUSEHOLDERS on a flood-hit Huthwaite street have given a cautious welcome to plans to introduce new flooding defences.
Mill Lane has repeatedly been plagued by flooding problems over the past year, leaving residents facing expensive and time-consuming clean-up operations.
As part of the proposals, which have been drawn up by Nottinghamshire County Council, Severn
Trent, the Environment Agency and Ashfield District Council, work to divert floodwater away from the street and stop fly-tippers from blocking drains will be carried out.
It is hoped the work, which is expected to cost around £250,000 and must now be rubber-stamped by the Environment Agency, will be completed by September.
Alan Brittain, who lives on the street, told Chad: "We are happy with these plans as long as they actually happen. We have heard promises before in the past that things will be fixed and then it has not happened.
"People on the street do not care who fixes the problem, we just want an end to this flooding nightmare once and for all."
Neighbour Russ Roberts told Chad the proposals could be good news for long-suffering people on the street.
Said Russ: "I believe that a solution is now coming and that people are doing what they can to help us.
"It has not been rubber-stamped yet, but hopefully it will soon move on. We would like to thank Coun Ray Buttery because he always comes to the street when we need him and has given us a lot of help throughout this ordeal."
Coun Buttery, who represents the area for Ashfield District Council, told Chad he would continue to keep the pressure on.
"What is being proposed looks promising and I believe will help solve the problems," he said.
"If there is a torrential downpour there may be not much we can do about that. I will keep pushing for this work to be carried out as soon as possible."
