PRECAUTIONARY measures have been put in place at Sutton Lawn's pond following the discovery of high levels of blue-green algae in the water.
Health chiefs at Ashfield District Council have put up new signs alerting the public to the dangers of the algae, which can cause skin rashes if touched by humans.

It can also kill pets and regular monitoring will take place in the coming weeks.

Paul Shackley, head of health and housing, told Chad: "Deliberate contact with the water is inadvisable since contact with the water and especially surface scum can present risks of skin rashes or stomach upsets in humans.

"Swimming within the pond is already prohibited and so it is not expected that humans will be fully immersed in the water.

"Anglers at the site are recommended to adopt good personal hygiene by washing hands after contact with the water."

For further information contact environmental protection officers at Ashfield District Council on Mansfield 457418.
