ASHFIELD MP Geoff Hoon has been named the Government's new Transport Secretary in today's Cabinet reshuffle by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
Speculation had grown that Mr Hoon would move from his position as Labour's Chief Whip to replace Ruth Kelly, who sparked the reshuffle when she announced her resignation during the party's recent conference.

And on Friday morning, Mr Hoon's office confirmed that the former Defence Secretary, who has represented Ashfield in Parliament since 1992 and has been Chief Whip since June 2007, was travelling to London, where his change in role was expected to be confirmed.

That confirmation came through later in the morning.
