Ofsted inspectors, who visited the Hucknall Road school on 16th and 17th April, praise the atmosphere at the school as children gain a good understanding of right and wrong.
There is also an awareness of the needs of others and there is little ev
idence of bullying at the school.
Inspectors say pupils are enthusiastic about physical activity and enjoy swimming and taking part in a range of sports on a regular basis.
Headteacher David Stonier's leadership is praised and the report says that all staff have an awareness of the improvements which need to be made.
But inspectors found that when pupils enter the primary school, their numerical and language skills are below expectations and while they make good progress in Year One and Two, standards are slightly below the national average.
And although pupils make satisfactory progress in Years Three to Six, by the age of 11 standards are below average, especially in mathematics, speaking and writing.
Inspectors pointed out that steps had been taken to improve these areas, but they had not always been consistent and more needs to be done to ensure children are confident and achieving the best they can.
Mr Stonier told Chad: "We are delighted the Ofsted inspectors found so many positive features in our school, including the fact that they say 'the overall feel of the school is a positive and encouraging environment' and 'children like coming to school and behave well'.
"These comments are testament to the fantastic staff and governors who work extremely hard to ensure the children of Newstead have the best possible primary school experience."
