In the 90th United States PGA Championship, won at the weekend by Padraig Harrington, Oliver Wilson had a tough time with the weather and set up of the Oakland Hills Course, missing the cut at 15 over par.
Fortunately for Wilson, two of his closest rivals for a Ryder Cup spot, Soren Hansen and Martin Kaymer, also missed the cut.
But a strong showing by runner-up Sergio Garcia secured his position in the world rankings, while Justin Rose’s ninth place finish listed him above Wilson, Hanson and Kaymer in the European list.
With three qualifying events left Kaymer is the only one of the players in the running to tee off this week in the SAS Masters, an event in which he finished runner-up last year.
The final two events are the The KLM Open next week and the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, after which the team will have sorted itself out, leaving captain Nick Faldo to make his two wildcard picks.
Next Monday Wilson will have his mind on other things - if that’s possible - when he tees up with members of the team that won the right to play with him in the Lloyds TSB Cardnet Oliver Wilson DARE charity golf day, having bid in a hotly contested internet charity auction that more than surpassed the reserve price.
The team will be joining in the fight for the Oliver Wilson DARE UK Charity Cup at the Notts Golf Club Hollinwell course.
Prizes
On the day itself there will be the chance to bid for some fabulous prizes including a Phil Mickelson signed Callaway Tour bag and an opportunity to drive with the UK’s leading rally driver Eoin Campbell around the Scottish Rally course.
l Strong squads from Italy, the Netherlands and particularly Spain, plus entries from Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland will pit their skills against the best that Britain can offer in the Reid Trophy at Coxmoor this week.
The English Boys U14 Championship was won by a European for the first time last year when Stanislas Gautier lifted the trophy at Porters Park to take the trophy to France.
The foreign challenge looks to be even stronger this year with Spain sending 16 players to the event, while there are five entrants each from Italy and the Netherlands.
Of the home players, Josh Fagan, off three handicap, is a member of the Yorkshire under-16 team and has an unbeaten record playing for the men’s team at Cleveland.
There are several countyU14 champions in the field, among them Conor Warne from Carlyon Bay who is the Cornish U14 champion, while Isaac Walker (Radcliffe-on-Trent) owns that title in Nottinghamshire.
The players with the lowest handicaps are Delon Hau from Vale of Glamorgan, Zac Galliford from Borth and Ynyslas, and Gareth Roden from Old Padeswood, all off scratch, while the youngest, at just 11 years old, is Joshua Thorley from Broughton Heath, Derbyshire.
