Wilson moves towards Ryder Cup spot

Oliver Wilson took another step to making the European Ryder Cup Team taking a share of 27th place his first appearance in a World Golf Championship event, the Bridgestone Invitational at Akron, Ohio last week.
Going into the last round tied in 38th place he got his round of to a great start with birdies at the opening two holes but dropped shots at the 8th and 15th undid the good work.

But he dug in deep and pulled out two birdies in the final three hol
es to finish at level par for the tournament.

With things so tight in the Ryder Cup standings those two birdies may yet be more important than they may appear now.

He gets another chance to add to his Ryder Cup points tally this week in the years final Major the US PGA Championship at Oakland Hills.

In the Opening round he finds himself paired with Vaughn Taylor, another former Augusta State University standout and PGA member Curt Sanders.

Greg Owen just missed out on another top ten finish in the Nationwide tour’s Cox Classic presented by Chevrolet when he finished tied in 12th place after for sub-par rounds for 14 under par.

He tees up on Thursday in the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open still looking for his first victory in the States.

l Chris Morgan was in sparkling form on Saturday winning the Top Division of the Men’s Medal at Coxmoor with a nett 65 followed by Heath Linacre and Clive Graham on nett 68.

Bob Evans won Division Two on a count back from Rob Clarke both with nett 69s.

The club’s Ladies Centenary Cup was won by Stephanie Marriott with 43 points, one clear of second placed Louise Hunt.

After a first round 76 Richard Beastall looked to be out of contention in Rufford Park’s Scratch Cup, but a best of the day 68 in the second round saw him climb up the leaderboard to win by one from Neil Hanson, with Russ Griffiths third on 147.

When handicaps were taken into consideration, Beastall again came out on top with a 36-hole total of 136 to lift the Nett Trophy followed by Simon Green on 138 and Russell Griffiths with 139.

The President’s Putter went to 21 handicap Tom Crawthorne whose nett 67 lifted the cup by one from Richard Beastall and Neil Hanson, with Hanson’s round of 69 winning the best scratch prize.

The Ladies’ July Stableford was won by Emily Lyle with 43 points, four better than runner up Betty Moir.

Brierley Forest had a good turnout for their Davcolm Cup Singles Stableford played off full handicap with 87 members taking part. Winner with a massive total of 51 points was Paul Knight - eight better than Dave Vardy who took second on a count back from Jordan Butler.
