LEAGUE new boys Brighouse Town left Carnarvon Street on Saturday with a gift of all three points as Teversal failed to capitalise on the openings they created.
And the visitors may be thinking that the step up from the West Yorkshire League is an easy one after this workmanlike performance.
The early exchanges saw both sides trying to play football and it was Brighouse who created the first opening of note when Brian Matthews’ through ball found Matt Roy who lifted his effort over the advancing Danny Herring, but Liam Pride did superbly to track back and clear the goalbound effort.
In reply Kyle Gee-Pemberton found Marco Marchetta who in turn held off the defender before forcing Paul Brown into a routine save down low to his right.
For a period up to the break, the home side dominated proceedings. Rob Orton tried his luck from a far post corner, but that was blocked by Calum Rodgers. Orton then fired over the bar after an enterprising build up which was possibly the best move of the afternoon, involving Michael Lyall, Jack Townroe and Jamie Hudson.
With half time approaching Townroe thought his 20-yard effort had put a true reflection on the game, but Brown made an excellent full length save that saw the visitors the happier of the two sides going in 0-0 at the break.
Brighouse re-emerged the sharper of the two sides and a free kick and corner in early exchanges saw the home side having to be on their defensive mettle in the short spell of pressure.
But after that initial five minute burst the home side regained control of the game, although the new boys stood up to the test and defended their goal superbly.
Teversal did create ample opportunities and on the hour mark had the ball in the net twice, but both efforts were ruled out. Firstly Hudson combined with Orton but was ruled offside as he lifted the effort over Brown. The second effort saw Townroe round Brown and pull the ball back for Gee-Pemberton to fire home, but this effort was ruled out because Townroe had been adjudged to allow the ball to run out at the by-line after rounding the Brighouse keeper.
This gave Brighouse the belief it was their day and the game became more open.
On 78 minutes though the home side again went close when Gee-Pemberton put an inch perfect cross into the visitors’ six yard box with Marchetta timing his run to meet the cross, only to place his finish straight at Brown when, had the effort been a yard either side it would have been a certain goal.
With the opportunities mounting up and not being taken, the true cost was realised when a minute later the visitors took the lead.
