As at Carnoustie last year, Oliver Wilson's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale came to an end in windy conditions on Thursday and Friday.
After a promising start, dropped shots in the middle of the opening round cost him dear and he finished off with a 77, giving him a tough job on Friday to secure a place for the final two days play.

And a birdie-less second round of 74 left Wilson
disappointingly two shy of the cut and on his way home.

He now has a week off to prepare for a big two weeks in America when he gets his first chance to play in the Bridgestone World Golf Championship at the Firestone Country Club's South Course in Akron, Ohio on Thursday week.

The week after he tees up in the final major of the year, the 90th US PGA Championship at Oakland Hills.

A good result in either of these events could book him a return to the States in mid September to the white hot heat of Valhalla as a member of the European Team for the Ryder Cup.

Greg Owen returns to action in the Nationwide Tour on Thursday in the Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational on Columbus Ohio, looking to take a step further in guaranteeing his PGA Tour Card for next year.

Coxmoor's men's Hodgson Rose Bowl went to Ivan Langton with 42 points, three better than runner-up Richard Betts.

It was a close run thing in the Coates Cup when Phil Reynolds picked up the prize after a four man count back with Phil Strachan, Ben Cumberland and Nigel Roberts.

Trevor Wagg won the First Division of the July Medal on a count back from James Rutter after they both carded nett 70, with Ray Linacre returning the day's best score of 75.

I. Stevenson won the Second Division, also on a count back from Ken Yates, both with nett 71.

Joyce Hayward won the handicap competition at Coxmoor Ladies' Summer Meeting on the back nine from Mildred Aimson, both with nett 69s, with the scratch prize going to Jill Cartwright with a round of 79.

Sally Friend carded the best front nine of 31 nett with Irene Dawkins shooting the best inward half of 32.5 nett.

The Ladies Open Greensome was won by the Coxmoor pairing of Chris Hill and Louise Hunt with 42 points on the back nine from visitors from Blankney, J Heywood and B Palfreyman.

Pam Jordan won the Silver Division of the July Medal with a nett 74 with the best scratch score of 87 coming from Sue Colley.

In the Bronze Division Judi Burton took first place with a nett 71 ahead of runner- up Rhiannon Linacre.

The Early Bird was won by the team of Viv Radford, Stephanie Marriott and Louise Hunt on 94 points followed by Judi Burton, Sylvia Fidler and Maureen Leverton, who took second on the back six from Sue Fensome, Janet Cooper and Muriel Morgan, both teams with 86 points.

Nearest the pin prizes on the 17th went to Judy Parker in the Silver Division and Diane Stone in the Bronze Division.

Michael Sissons carded a nett 67, off 12, to win Rufford Park's Open Anniversary Cup by from Alex Etches and Dave Kimberley.

The day's best scratch rounds of 73 were returned by Alex Etches and Lee Willson.

Jerry Hubber won the Midweek Medal with a nett 70 with Leslie Johnson taking second and the scratch prizes with Kevin Emery in third.

The senior's July Stableford went to B. Woodcock with 38 points from J. Clunie and B. Barker, both on 37 points.

The nearest the pin prize went to S. Kerry.

The top division of the weekend stableford went to Michael Willets with 36 points followed by Stephen Jones, who took second on a count back from Russell Griffiths, both on 35 points.

A count back separated Dave Stacey and Ged Hankey in Division Two with Stacey taking the honours after they both returned best of the day scores of 37 points - one better than third placed Michael Sissons.

Division One player Tim Reynolds returned a best of the day nett 66 to win the Jimmy Rippin Trophy and the First Division at Oakmere Park.

Second in Division One, four adrift, was Ben Fearson with Brian Waltham taking third spot on nett 72.

In the Second Division David White came first on nett 71 followed by Paul Thresher, nett 72 and Tony Eaton on nett 73.

Jack Wolstenhulme won Division Three with a nett 70, two better than Scott Jackson and David Cooper.

The Thursday July medal was played with Divisions One and Two amalgamated with Ollie Reynolds winning with a nett 69 with John D. Harris in second on nett 71 and Dale Shepherd in third with a nett 72.

Shane Adams won Division Three on a count back from Paul Hodgkinson both with nett 72 with third place going to David Robinson on nett 74.

Sue Reynolds' nett 75 won the July June Challenge Medal on nett 73, four ahead of runner-up Jackie Frith.

She also won the Jasper Shield carding 34 points to win by two from Diane Payne.

Gill Cheshire won the Margaret Roach Trophy with a 73 nett followed by Christine Muse on nett 74 and Carol Houghton with a 77 nett.

Chris Wilson won the First Division of the Seniors Stableford with 37 points - one ahead of Alan Clarke - with the Second Division going to Bob Arberry, also with 37 points - two clear of Ian Kirkham.

Norwood Park Golf Course's annual Invitation Day attracted 126 golfers from clubs all over the Midlands with Glynn Brown and M. Wallhead winning the Men's competition with 44 points with the Mixed/ Ladies Division competition going to Steve Musgrove and Rita Butcher with 37 points.

Brierley Forest's 36 hole Scratch Cup at the weekend was won by club captain Chris Singleton with rounds of 75 and 77 respectively making him eight over par in all.

This was a great effort considering the 'Royal Birkdale' style winds.

Second place went to current Club Champion Gary Dellar who carded rounds of 83 and 80, giving him a 19 over par total, with third place going to Kev Coupe with rounds of 87 and 77.

One of club's majors, The Art Gibson Classic, attracted 86 players with Sean King lifting the trophy with a nett 65, off 10, with D. Marriott second with a nett 67 followed by A. Hammond with a gross 89, nett 68.

Division One of the monthly stableford was won by Keith Florence with a score of 38 points, one ahead of M. Hall, with Gary Edwards in third on 36 points.

New members R. Dalby returned 41 points to win Division Two followed by C. Walsh with 39 points and N. Milbourne on 38 points.
