A 50-YEAR-OLD man has appeared in court charged with murder after a father-of-four died following an altercation in Swanwick.
Stephen Byard (55), from Lower Somercotes, died from a stab wound following a late-night incident on Pentrich Road on Saturday.

Police were called to the scene just before midnight and found Mr Byard collapsed in the street.

He was taken to Derbyshire Royal Infirmary but died shortly afterwards.
Martin Argyle, also of Lower Somercotes, appeared before Southern Derbyshire magistrates on Tuesday and spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

The case will now be sent to Nottingham Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on 23rd June.

Julie Emmerson, landlady of The Black Horse pub in Somercotes and a friend of Mr Byard, was among those who paid tribute to him this week.
She told Chad Mr Byard was well-known and well-liked and those who knew him were stunned by his death.

"Everyone is shocked," she said. "I knew him for 20 years. He came in the pub every Saturday night."

She said Mr Byard was a loving father to his four sons and was a man who kept himself to himself and loved cars and motorbikes.

Julie added that she saw him on the night of the incident and was finding it hard to come to terms with his death.

"It's a mess, just a mess," she said. "I've just been looking at photos of him because I still can't believe it. He came into the pub on the night it happened and he was just his normal jokey self."

And postmaster Chris Thorp –– who lives above the Pentrich Road post office close to the scene of the incident –– told Chad this week residents in Swanwick remained in shock.

"The first I knew of it was when I saw the tape across the road on Sunday morning," he said.

"It's quite disturbing it should happen in a place like Swanwick. It's a quiet place, I wouldn't say sleepy but it's certainly quiet.

"Everyone says hello to each other and it's just a nice little community. People are shocked by what has happened.

"This is the ninth year I have been here and it's the first time anything like this has happened."

Police are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to contact them on 0845 123 3333.
