LEABROOKS mum Alison Taylor, right, presents a cheque for £8,075 to the Myfanwy Townsend Melanoma Research Fund following the first successful Katie's Midnight Walk fundraiser.
The money was raised by 157 walkers, who all took part in a five-mile walk around Somercotes on 21st June — just five days after Alison's daughter Katie lost her battle with malignant melanoma.

Fifteen-year-old Katie, of Albert Street, was diagnosed with the skin cancer in 2006 and it left her confined to bed and in need of having her spine cemented.

Organisers of the walk are now hoping to make the Katie's Midnight Walk an annual, nationwide event to raise money for the Myfanwy Fund, which aims to find a cure for malignant melanoma and increase awareness.

Another donation of £1,100 was also made by the landlords of the Limekiln pub in Wirksworth following a charity concert and bungee jump.

  • Also pictured receiving the donation are Myfanwy's widower Harry Townsend and his partner, and walk organiser Susan Williams, left.
