Coxmoor Golf Club

Coxmoor Golf Club

The Course

18 holes, 6571 yards, 5944 metres. Par 73 S.S.S. 72.

Testing tree lined heathland championship course.

The deceptive opening hole, one of the best in the county, fools many a player with its wide fairway. But a good drive is needed down the left side of the fairway to open up the hole for the second to the green.

The fifth and sixth are both tough holes from the back tees the fifth into the prevailing breeze and the sixth a long uphill par five with an intimidating tee shot.

The seventh, ninth and eleventh are all picturesque holes of the finest quality the eleventh needing a straight drive the be able to avoid a blind approach to the green.

The 12th, stroke index 1, is straight into the wind on most occasions and from the 13th tee you get excellent views over the course.

The 18th, a par five, gives the better player a good chance of a birdie finish.

Founded in 1913 Coxmoor has had only three professionals in its history. Leonard White was succeeded by his son George Marshall White (Bill) who handed over the reigns to David Ridley in 1985 after 37 years as club professional.

In 1957 Coxmoor became the only club in the country to supply two players for the same Walker Cup team when Alec Shepperson and Alan Bussell were both picked.

Shepperson was chosen again two years later when he played a young Jack Nicklaus in the singles.

Oliver Wilson was the latest player from the club to be selected for the Walker Cup when he was chosen for the 2003 macth to be played at Ganton.

The course has staged the regional qualifying rounds for the Open Championship as well as the British Seniors Amateur Open Championship with the nearby Sherwood Forest Club.
