MANY may question why a visiting goalkeeper is named man of the match when they put in an excellent performance to record a stunning 2-0 win at one of the hardest grounds for visitors to pick up results.
But Teversal keeper Jonathan Wilson deserved
his accolade for some excellent second half saves, one of which stood out above the rest.
Had that been seen on 'Match Of The Day', the BBC would have shown it for weeks on end and probably named it the save of the season.
But Wilson's heroics followed a first half performance that was arguably the Tevie Boys' best since their promotion to the Northern Counties East League.
And Worsbrough simply could not cope with the quality football being played down the defined slope by the visitors.
Teversal were rewarded with the lead after only five minutes when a neat build up saw Walker in space to attack the home side, with the defenders electing to mark the Teversal strikers. That gave Walker the space to attack before producing a quality lob that left Stainthorpe stranded as the ball nestled in the back of the net.
Twelve minutes later it was 2-0 when Thorpe produced a calm finish after another neat passing move created the opening.
Both Teversal strikers Orton and Hall went close on numerous occasions, as chances continued to be created.
Walker hit the bar and Thorpe was denied by the home keeper.
With Fletcher and Rhodes dominating the midfield, and the Teversal defence holding firm when put under some pressure, it was a an accomplished all-round performance.
In fact Worsbrough only created two openings of note, when first Walton and then Wilkson were denied by Wilson.
The second half saw a much improved Worsbrough side making the most of the slope, and their two substitutions adding that bit of grit that was missing in the first period.
The visitors were now being pegged back in their own half and had to rely on breaks to ease the pressure.
But when the home side started to create their openings, they found themselves up against the in-form Wilson who denied Wilkinson, Hirst and Neesam before making that top drawer save on 74 minutes.
It came when Worsbrough found themselves with the extra man. Neesam crossed to Walton who had the time and space to produce the perfect volley from 10 yards. It looking destined to bulge the net, but Wilson somehow popped up from his near post to dive full length, get a hand on the ball and direct it over the bar.
Teversal did create further openings themselves, and again Orton, Hall, Walker and Fletcher went close.
Overall this was an excellent game and a credit to the Northern Counties East League and certainly sets up a tasty return fixture this Saturday (3pm) when Worsbrough visit Carnarvon Street.
